FOTD: Vamp
On June 12th, I went downtown to a jewelry preview that was chock full of Stephanieisms — skulls, snakes, studs, gothy mermaids, mystical jewels. So my only choice was to vamp up my make up. And why not? It was definitely time to be saucy and sultry. One of the ways I up the drama factor is with some false eyelashes and these babies are only a $1 at Target. And they last! I buy the lashes in packs, for serious.

Creation Myth
In the beginning,
everyone looked like faded crystals.
Dusty brown rose covered cheeks,
gossamer lips, celestial tongues.
Everyone was a lover.
Head wounds grew flowers,
the sky sighed in purple
and ribs were just pure quartz.
(They never broke, just bruised
a bit now and then).
Language was a fluid thing,
just vibrating vocal chords.
There was no need call out,
spread the gossamer and
open the tongues.
The universe is waiting
for a second invitation.

A Sleepless Night
April, and the last of the plum blossoms
scatters on the black grass
before dawn. The sycamore, the lime,
the struck pine inhale
the first pale hints of sky.
An iron day,
I think, yet it will come
dazzling, the light
rise from the belly of leaves and pour
burning from the cups
of poppies.
The mockingbird squawks
from his perch, fidgets,
and settles back. The snail, awake
for good, trembles from his shell
and sets sail for China. My hand dances
in the memory of a million vanished stars.
