Modern English

{ September 21, 2013 }

Dorothy Perkins blouse; H&M jeans; Dolce Vita boots; Urban Outfitters sunglasses.

Ah, mod. Nothing really beats feeling at ease in a great outfit. I’ve been developing a penchant towards all this mod lately, and let me tell you it feels so me. I feel comfortable, in a I-feel-like-myself sort of way.

Gryphon leather jacket; Helmut Lang tank & skirt; wedges c/o Kmart, Swarovski ring.

My uniform consists of: studs, something slightly structured and asymmetrical. This Helmut Lang skirt has been a NYFW staple for me — comfortable, polished but cool.

Legs for Days

{ July 3, 2013 }

Tobi blouse; Dorothy Perkins shorts; Zara shoes; Zennioptical glasses.

When it’s hot, I like to keep it simple. Black denim shorts are my closet staple. Oh, hell, everything black is a wardrobe staple for me. An airy blouse and some smokin’ but super comfy Zara sandals is my vibe. Perfect for signing my new apartment lease followed by a celebration cocktail.

Fox’s top; Kimberly Ovitz skirt; Forever 21 sandals & bracelet; Geoffrey Goode diamond & ebony studs; Fred Flare sunglasses.

Here’s something you might not know about me: I’m a total beach lover. The surf, crashing waves, myths of mermaids, beach houses, sea glass, endless sand… I’m all over that imagery like any other poet. If I couldn’t get to the beach, I decided to be inspired by Malibu waves and a carefree attitude. A slashed boxy top reminds me of something a surfer girl shopping at Garage might wear. A pastel seafoam knit skirt added to the mix makes it like I’m some kind of mermaid in disguise. I wish.

{ June 2013 }

Dress: Forever 21
Crop Top: BCBGeneration
Sandals: Sam Edelman
Bag: c/o YakPak
Necklace: House of Harlow
Sunglasses: Anthropologie

Even though my outfit sensibilities can be a wee bit rebellious, I’m a sucker for classics with a twist. Black and white are perfect combinations for any wardrobe.

I thought I would be the last sucker on earth who would ever wear crop top, but here you go. Fashion can be surprising. I used to think the same about backpacks — as if I left them back in grade school. I’ve been coming around with a vintage leather one my mom gave me and now YakPak sent me a cool muted gray and black back pack to style.

Now here’s the real sweetener: you can win a YakPak of your own! You can go more classic with my style (hello Fast Times inspo) or get a little funky with bright colors and patterns. Details to enter and win are below. My giveaway will end on July 6, 2013. Good luck to all!

Coney Island Dreaming

{ June 2, 2013 }

Dress: H&M
Cardigan: Forever 21
Sandals: Forever 21
Sunglasses: Pop
Bag: c/o Katherine Kwei
Necklace: c/o Kensie

I am so fascinated the ghosts of old New York, especially those lingering around Coney Island. The leftover magic, carousels, automated fortune telling machines, and old, stoic roller coasters.

After sending off my lovely senior class at graduation — hence, the sunburns on my legs — I decided to explore Coney Island with a trip to Red Hook Lobster in between. This summer dress is perfect for wearing under a graduation gown and did double duty for hanging out after. I used to not be so into yellow, but how presh is the Kensie necklace? It totally brings out the colors in the floral printed H&M number.

Winged Victory

{ May 25, 2013 }

Dress: BCBGeneration
Flats: Jeremy Scott for Adidas
Sunglasses: Queen of Hearts & Modern Love
Necklace: Bauble Bar

I have a special talent: I never really know what to wear. I’m the master of standing in front of my closet, slack jawed, open mouthed, and staring at the racks for an aimless amount of minutes. This little black dress is my go-to savior. Plus, how fun are these winged flats by Jeremy Scott? They make me feel weightless and cool. Oh, yes.

Lately, I am drawn to light prints like a moth to a flame.* The eye catching print always strikes me as “mellow futuristic.” Add a sleek ponytail into the mix, and there’s my outfit.

* While that simile may be on the more glamorous side, the reality of it is that I’m crazy for it like my dog’s obsession with anything bacon flavored.

A few years ago in grad school, I remarked to a girlfriend that I always admired her style. It was simple but not bland and always on point. Yet there was always something bubbly about her. She remarked, that she based most of her wardrobe around black and white with pops of color here and there. So, this is my — years later — interpretation of my friend and colleague, J. Black, white, and one eye opening shock of something metallic.

I’ve been itching to wear these rose gold jeans since Christmas when I bought them on a mega sale. And with spring finally here, I had to break out the pink gold.
